Our Story

Sebaggala Hassan

CEO, Founder

On a small piece of land gifted to Sebaggala Hassan by his late grandmother, something extraordinary began—a home, a school, and a future for Uganda’s most vulnerable children.

This land has become a lifeline. Here, alongside the orphaned children themselves, we grow food—bananas, sweet potatoes, yams, maize, cassava, beans, and more. Uganda has two planting seasons, and each harvest feeds over 300 orphaned children under our care, ensuring they receive three nourishing meals every day that’s breakfast, lunch, and supper.

But it didn’t stop there.

In 2018, we took another step of faith. With no children ready to sit for final exams yet, but filled with determination, we started a primary school, offering free education from Nursery to Primary Six. The idea was born in the heart of Hassan and took shape in humble classrooms built from papyrus mats, mud, and timber.

That’s when two incredible souls from the United States, Richard Phillips and his wife Alice, heard our story. Touched by the children’s smiles and resilience, they gave generously—and changed everything. They donated desks, chairs, beds, chalkboards, textbooks, built brick classrooms, installed a water tank and purifiers, and covered teacher salaries and allowances. They also provided mattresses, mosquito nets, food items, sports equipment, and more—raising the standard of living at both the school and orphanage beyond what we had ever dreamed.

They weren’t just donors—they were family.

But when COVID-19 struck, tragedy found us again. Richard and Alice both succumbed to the virus. May their souls rest in peace. Their passing was devastating. Not just because we lost our greatest supporters—but because we lost people who believed in our children’s future as much as we do.

Their absence brought immense grief and hardship because it left us without funding for scholastic materials or teacher wages. The school and orphanage began to struggle. At the same time, the pandemic also devastated families across Uganda as many children lost their parents, leading to a rise in child-headed households in our district. In response, our organization welcomed these newly orphaned children as we couldn’t look away—we opened our doors and our hearts, sharing the little we had during that difficult time. This increased our population to 300 children, causing overcrowding in our dormitories and increasing the need for additional beds, mattresses, and blankets and food.

During the 2020–2021 election campaigns, several politicians visited us, moved by the children’s stories. They donated more beds, food, sanitizers, and face masks, and promised long-term support. But once elected, their promises faded. Once again, our teachers faced months without pay, and to survive, we began selling some of our extra food harvest just to cover teacher salaries—keeping the school open, even in hardship.

Then came another blow.

Sadly, last year, Hassan’s beloved grandmother—the woman who gifted us the land—passed away. In the wake of her death, her family demanded that Hassan begin paying an annual rent of $60,000 USD to continue using the land. They’ve threatened to demolish the school and orphanage buildings, and to evict the children if the fee is not paid.

Dear friends, this is not just a number. This amount could buy land of our own, where we could build a permanent school and orphanage, free from fear and eviction. A place where hope cannot be taken away.

That is why Sebaggala Hassan is reaching out to you—humbly, and from the depths of his heart appealing to all those reading this message to consider supporting the children. His only desire is to serve as a worker on behalf of willing donors, with full transparency and accountability

We are not asking for charity. We are asking you to join our mission, to help write a new chapter in the lives of 300 orphaned children who have suffered too much but still dare to dream.

Hassan asks for nothing for himself. He is willing to serve only as a caretaker on behalf of any donor willing to help. All land titles and documents will be registered in your name—you will not just be supporting the children; you will be part of their story.

We know the world is full of needs. But if your heart has been stirred, and you believe in second chances and lasting impact—then please, stand with us.

Together, we can build a future that no one can take away from these children.

May God richly bless you.
